The Japanese Government has announced a suspension of the slaughter of 50 humpback whales due to increasing worldwide attention on the Japanese commercial whaling operation masquerading as a scientific expedition. The United States brokered the deal, which Japan agreed to conditionally that the International Whaling Commission (IWC) reinstates its original task of whale resource management. Friday, December 21, 2007 : The Senate voted almost unanimously Dec. 13 to raise car and truck fuel economy standards for the first time in 30 years. The bill, passed 86-8, requires a 40 percent increase in fuel economy for U.S. vehicles, to an average of 35 miles a gallon by 2020. It is considered a landmark step toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking some 60 million cars off the road....

David Taylor, a veteran yachtie from Tauranga, departed New Zealand today (December 20) for a two month voyage in his homebuilt yacht, Anne Marie, in the Southern Ocean to protest against the Japanese whaling fleet. Foolish? Maybe, but he has the support of huge numbers of New Zealanders who want whaling in the Southern Ocean stopped. He joins ships from Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd and the Australian Government Customs and Fisheries Patrol in hunting the whalers....

Captain Paul Watson from the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin has offered to co-operate with Greenpeace in searching for the Japanese whaling fleet, utilizing the Sea Shepherd helicopter, Kookaburra. Greenpeace ship Esperanza departed Auckland, New Zealand without their helicopter which had mechanical problems....

At a press conference in Sydney a coalition of environment and whale watching groups including Greenpeace, The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Humane Society International, Project Jonah, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and the National Whale Watch Association have again called on the Australian Government to take immediate action to stop whaling by the Japanese whale fleet....

After seeing a TV commercial of a leading German car manufacturer touting its overdesigned windshield wipers that they claim could handle driving on the Autobahn in the rain, and after finding the specs for a 200hp, 30mpg car on a different German car manufacturer's website (ie the technology for super mpg cars is on today's showroom floor, but is being wasted by building muscle cars with ever more hp instead of slimming down these engines and cars to get higher mpg), I wrote this petition....
