Independent Media Summit
New College,  777 Valencia Street, San Francisco
10 AM to 4 PM.
The first Independent Media Center (IMC) was created last year to cover  the WTO protest actions in Seattle. Since then over twenty IMC’s have  been created, a remarkable achievement in a very short span of time. This  summit will be an opportunity for those involved in the independent  media movement to assess where we’ve been, where we are now and  where we’re going next.  By evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of  this movement we can effectively plan and strategize for future action.

An Independent Media Center (IMC) will be set up at Media Alliance to  cover the NAB events.  If you can help out with this in any way please  get in touch with us. Using the past IMC models we will have individual  teams responsible for print, video, audio, web-casting, server upkeep,  etc. 415-546-6334, extension 315..

Affinity groups are encouraged to plan independent actions throughout the duration of the NAB Conference. Possible targets could include the NAB/FCC Breakfast on Friday morning and the NAB/Congressional Breakfast on Saturday morning. And of course, the exhibit floor itself.

If you can help organize for this event, Media Alliance is having regular meetings every Wednesday at 6:30 pm

Shock and Awe, by Sam Seedorf, chronicles the pre-invasion Iraq in the months leading up to the war that changed the face of the Middle East forever. Israeli police investigators are attempting to hold Indymedia Israel responsible for articles on the open publishing newswire of the website. This is being done illegally and against the recommendations of a professional committee of the Israel Ministry of Justice. Attorney Avner Pinchuk of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) sent a letter to the Israel Attorney General demanding an immediate end to the investigation. Attorney Pinchuk claims that the moment the police realized the site’s operators did not publish the articles themselves, it was illegitimate to harass them with an investigation. Worse than this, the police investigators are attempting to ‘convince’ the site’s operators to commit themselves to continual censorship over all articles in the open publishing zone of the site. Open publishing is an integral part of Indymedia that allows anyone to post their news on the website in order to foster democratic media-making and freedom of speech that is nonexistent amongst the corporate controlled media outlets.

Women In Indymedia
Women have always been integral participants, creators, and organizers within Indymedia. Unfortunatley, the Indymedia movement has not always maintained a welcoming or sustainable environment in which women media-makers and activists can thrive. Lately, it has become evident to many people that women within Indymedia are facing a crisis. Women have been leaving IMCs at an alarming rate, and many site sexist attitudes within their IMC as part of the reason for their leaving. Other challenges facing women in Indymedia include having less spare time to do internet activism, either because of family responsibilities, lack of technical equipment, or the necessity of working more hours for economic survival than their male IMC-counterparts. To combat the isolation that women can sometimes feel, a global Indymedia women’s list was created as a forum for women in Indymedia to discuss the problems they face and to share information. A proposal to enhance women’s participation was drafted by the members of the Indymedia Women’s list and is now being circulated and discussed throughout the Indymedia network.
