Delta advocates blasted the staff plan for being a "rubber stamp" for the Bay Delta Conservation Plan to build a peripheral canal or tunnel to export more Delta water to corporate agribusiness interests on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley and southern California water agencies.

While Jerry Brown plans to slash the state budget, he is fast-tracking a government boondoggle that will deliver more subsidized water to corporate agribusiness interests so they can market the water back to the public for an enormous profit....

Taugher is known for his coverage of Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta issues, including the dramatic decline of Delta smelt, longfin smelt, Central Valley salmon, threadfin shad, striped bass and other fish species in recent years, due to a combination of increases in water exports, toxics and invasive species. He also covered the scandal of agribusiness tycoon Stewart Resnick, owner of Paramount Farms, selling subsidized water back to the public for a big profit....

“More than five years into this process, the Bay Delta Conservation Plan still hasn’t met basic legal or scientific requirements,” said Rep. George Miller. “This is the last chance to fix it, and that’s why this delay is so important: it gives the scientists time to get it right. The Bay-Delta’s health is key to California’s future – we can either work out a good plan that reduces reliance on the Delta, or we can end up with increased litigation, uncertainty, and expense.”

“Who would get the water and who would pay the bill, which is now estimated to be $20 billion to upwards of $50 billion?” asked Conner Everts, Executive Director for the Southern California Watershed Alliance. “MWD opposes an independent cost-benefit analysis. But it’s MWD customers and other water district ratepayers in the southland who would pay the bill.”...

“Joe Grindstaff, with the Delta Stewardship Council (DSC), says the Delta Plan recommends new conveyance as a way to improve water quality," said Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, Executive Director of Restore the Delta. "Without a water quality analysis that examines how eliminating fresh water flows from entering the Delta will affect water quality, this draft of the Delta Plan is as incomplete as the last draft. The Delta Stewardship Council must build its plan on a cost benefit analysis, a public...

While a poacher was fined over $20,000 and sentenced to a week in jail for poaching 47 lobsters inside a "marine protected area," the state and federal governments are allowed to kill tens of millions of fish every year with impunity in order to export massive amounts of Delta water to wealthy corporate agribusiness interests on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley and southern California water agencies. There is no "Wild Justice" for the millions of Sacramento splittail, striped bass, thr...

“The proposed project, which some estimate will cost upwards of $50 billion, is not necessary and would result in massive ratepayer hikes and put our state even further into debt," said Kristin Lynch, Pacific Region Director with Food & Water Watch, a consumer advocacy organization....

"Coastside is coordinating this project because we want to be part of the solution to the challenges that the salmon fishery faces," said Gorelnik. "One challenge is the death trap of the Delta that requires the trucking or barging of juvenile fish. We are hopeful that a release on the San Mateo Coastline will provide good survival rates to adulthood and good opportunities for recreational and commercial anglers."

"We hope that these new appointees will follow the law and uphold their fidicuiary reponsibility to the people of California," said Carolee Krieger. "They need to remove the paper water from contracts by revoking the grossly overpromised water rights permits in California water systems."...

"We look forward to continuing to work with all local, state and federal agencies dedicated to ensuring successful marine planning and protection for San Francisco Bay subsequent to completing planning efforts in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta," said Secretary for Natural Resources John Laird and Director of Fish and Game Chuck Bonham....

"If their plan reflected a commitment to the best science, or common sense, they wouldn't build the new 'conveyance' at all, and there would be no need for a BDCP," said Bruce Tokars of Salmon Water Now. "The state would be much better served by prioritizing Delta levee repair, water conservation, and better groundwater management while retiring toxin-leaching farmland on the Westside of the San Joaquin Valley."...

Under pressure from the oil industry, Brown fired Derek Chernow, then acting director of the state Department of Conservation, and oil and gas supervisor Elena Miller in order to expedite the granting of permits for risky injection projects after the permitting had slowed in 2010 and 2011 after the tragic death of Chevron oil worker Robert David Taylor....

“For decades Reclamation has gone around Congress and the law,” declared Zeke Grader, PCFFA Executive Director. “Reclamation has blessed the destruction of the Bay Delta estuary, while sanctioning excessive water exports under 'interim water service contracts.'”

“Earthquake threat to the Delta – with the Hayward Fault 45 miles away - is minimal, according to levee expert Dr. Bob Pyke, but the State Water Project and Central Valley Project cross right over some of the most dangerous faults in California from Coalinga south to LA. Large engineered projects are more vulnerable to earthquake then Delta levees," said Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, Executive Director of Restore the Delta.

Propaganda from the NRDC praises SNWA pipeline proponent General Manager Pat Mulroy for her brilliant plan to heist groundwater from under the Goshute Nation and deliver it to her developer friends like Mr. Harvey Whittemore, an early funder of the pipeline. In the process of depleting the aquifer an entire spring fed ecosystem with endemic spring snails will be destroyed, but hey, we need more suburban sprawl in the desert so Whittemore and Mulroy can have a nice retirement at all of our exp...

“This scientific review shows that the House Majority’s water bill puts politics ahead of established science and would kill local jobs,” said Representative Mike Thompson. “The bill is nothing more than a giveaway to well-funded south-of-Delta water contractors. Solutions to California’s water challenges should be based on sound science so that wildlife is protected, and our fishers, farmers, families and businesses that depend on the Delta for their livelihoods are not harmed.”

“We are very happy with the outcome of this long and challenging process,” said Foothill Conservancy President Katherine Evatt after the meeting. “We’re proud of our foothill communities for coming together to tell EBMUD “no” and to protect the Mokelumne River. We’re glad we filed the suit and saw it through. And we’re grateful to EBMUD for changing course."...
