textHow the U.S. Exposed Thousands of Americans to Lethal Bacteria to Test Biological Warfare by Democracy Now
The Homeland Security Department last month released what they said was nontoxic gas into New York's Grand Central Station to trace how chemicals might flow through the terminal in a terrorist attack. We speak with biological and chemical terrorism expert Leonard Cole, who asks what this "nontoxic gas" actually was. He wrote a book about how - in the 1950s and 1960s, U.S. government scientists ran a series of tests to determine how easy it would be to expose large numbers of people ...

image4th of July in West Oakland: "the entire city was a war zone"
120_7-04-05_warehouse-020a_1.jpg
by dave id
Okay, it wasn't literally a war zone, just a bunch of extremely loud fireworks in every direction. As the very real war in Iraq continues to take lives and waste resources, Americans across the country delighted themselves in jingoistic small-town parades and/or shows of light and thunder in the night sky. In Oakland, neighborhood fireworks give the professional displays a run for their money. The threats of "zero-tolerance" for fireworks made by authorities beforehand apparently failed to...

textSupreme Justice O'Connor Resigns and Leaves Legacy As Key Swing Vote by Pete Yost (AP)
For this Fourth of July weekend, we are left to ponder the future direction of the SCOTUS (and gear up for some major fights for the future of America). It seems W will get to appoint at least two justices now that Sandra O'Connor has resigned and Renquist is expected to at any time. Replacing Renquist with another right-winger would not swing the court further to the right per se, but losing O'Connor's relative voice of moderation to a conservative nutjob will put many things such as repro...
