It is extremely unlikely that working people will benefit from the economic package presented by President Bush; millions of working people are presently behind on house payments, auto payments and are finding it difficult to pay monthly bills, including the cost for food, gas and fuel for home heating. Today, a majority of working class people are living from check to check and are struggling to keep up with the cost of living....

The “Health Care Security and Cost Reduction Act”, also known as ABX1 1, and described by New York Times reporter Kevin Sack as a “bipartisan blueprint” conceived by Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic Assembly speaker Fabian Nunez to bring “near-universal coverage to the country’s most populous state”, will neither provide health care security nor reduce costs of medical care. This article explains why....

Thursday, January 10, 2008 : How well our schools are working for our kids can be measured in a number of ways, but perhaps one of the most oddly elusive is with dropout rates, or its happier converse, graduation rates. At first glance, dropout rates would seem to be the most easily captured indicator of success or failure. After all, what could be simpler than comparing the size of a class when it enters 9th grade and when it departs at the end of the 12th grade? But the reality is not so si...

CorpWatch has launched a new wiki, Crocodyl to research corporations. The mainstream press has failed to keep corporations in check, and too often publishes information that is glossed over or filled with spin. Crocodyl aims to mobilize the activist and NGO communities to create a community of accountability around corporate behavior, and offer this research as a public service to anyone who has internet access. All work is licensed Creative Commons and can be used for any purposes, so lon...

Tuesday, January 8, 2008 : A California appeals court last month upheld a Los Angeles living wage law that requires a dozen major hotels near Los Angeles International Airport to pay some 3,500 workers wage and benefits that equal at least $10.64 an hour. The 3?0 ruling by a panel of the 2nd District Court of Appeals overturned an earlier one by a county court that blocked implementation of the wage floor....

The Justice For Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) scored Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. announcement last January 6, 2008 ” that the United States House of Representatives, headed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has assured that a bill that would provide $90 million a year to Filipino World War II veterans is being prioritized in Capitol Hill." In recent days, ABC in a debate of the candidates excluded Dennis Kucinich from participating in the national television debate of the Democrats while including Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. These media monopolies are again showing their true colors....

I heard nothing back after I submitted my letter to the Guardian so don't know if they'll publish it (not being critical, just a fact, generally they are a good paper), but I wanted to post something about this issue since the latest news is that CA will now be important for the presidential decision after the Iowa outcome. Paul supporters are mainly white homeowners in the Northwest. Anyone reading this who is not white should take notice that Paul is the candidate of choice by the White S...

Driving home from a New Years festival in Slab City, a bus-load of party-goers was stopped at an internal U.S. border patrol checkpoint within California. After refusing to have their bus searched, the border patrol got a drug dog and – claiming probable cause – proceeded to search the bus and every person on board. One passenger was arrested and another deported....

The 2008 presidential election is heating up. Neocon-Lite Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), in a spiel in the Baltimore Examiner, blasted President George W. Bush for shortchanging national priorities because of the cost of the Iraq War. She failed to mention, however, that she has been an enabler of that conflict and has done nothing to end it. The cynical Democratic Party strategy is to let the Iraq War continue and to blame Bush for everything....
