Chief Mills and a dozen or more cops, rangers, and camp trashers moved on to evict and fence out the homeless tent-shelter-in-place encampment along Water St. near the Post Office. This "out of sight/out of town" policy, while claiming a public health rationale rings false given the lack of protected indoor shelter being offered in spite of the funding available....

Some things are changing quickly. Others (sadly) not at all--such as the City's failure to provide the most elementary sanitary services such as porapotties, washing stations, and bathrooms (many of them now shutting down). The following e-mail I sent out as a replacement for my usual Wednesday HUFF meeting yesterday. Audio updates will be posted between times at http://www.huffsantacruz.org/Lostshows.html ....

Several hours ago the County of Santa Cruz Health Services Agency followed up on actions by San Francisco, Marin, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Mateo counties declaring much public assembly a misdemeanor. SANTA CRUZ, March 12, 2020 – On Wednesday, the Santa Cruz Public Safety Committee voted to approve a Surveillance Technology Ordinance that would prevent the government from using any surveillance technology without public debate, clear use policies, and mechanisms of oversight and accountability. The law also prohibits government use of facial recognition, and in what would be a national first, bans government use of predictive policing technology as well....

[March 13, 2020] To help reduce the serious risk of COVID-19 spreading in our community, the Campaign for Sustainable Transportation is postponing petition signature gathering to place on the ballot Santa Cruz city voters’ right to decide on future construction of a parking garage downtown. CFST wants our community to thrive, and there is no more fundamental basis for the common good than public health. Each of us individually and all of us collectively must work to create a sustainable commu...

A flyer distributed at the City Council Tuesday night 3-10-20, one side by me, the other by Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry, due back in town tomorrow after three weeks away.
I touch on the futility and foolishness of missing or locked sanitary facilities; Keith proposes his own 7-point program to address the escalating health and housing crisis....

SCPD Chief Andy Mills and reactionaries on the City Council want to "work around" the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Martin v. Boise decision. Since they refuse to open up survival encampments or vacant public buildings, police need "tools" to drive unhoused people out of public spaces. Hence the Mills 7-Point Plan......
