textJapan’s Nuclear Nightmare: The Price of Technological Optimism by Ritt Goldstein
We are all human, and that means we inevitably make mistakes - first BP in The Gulf, now Japan's nuclear crisis. A string of human errors has dogged the Fukushima Daiichi tragedy, from placing back-up generators in a low-lying area, to forgetting to refill fuel on vital pumps. Catastrophe is occurring, as is a cruel testimonial to the reality of 'nuclear safety', empty assurances of 'technological infallibility' having spawned a waking nightmare....

Probably in an effort to keep the problem of nuclear waste hidden from the public, these plants feature huge pools of water up in the higher level of the containment building above the reactors, which hold the spent fuel rods from the reactor.... Some of GE's plants in the US feature this same design... "....a spent-fuel pool fire could very well produce damage similar to or even greater than Chernobyl"....

textJust five years ago Japan's "worst case" quake scenario was an 8.6 quake every 500 years! by UPI repost
In 2006, the government predicted that the worst Japanese quake would be an 8.6, which would occur once every 500 years! (The current one was upgraded to 9.0 from 8.9 two days ago). They said that a 72 ft. tsunami would cause 2,700 deaths -- the current tsunami was just half as tall, but will probably be four times as deadly. And nuclear disasters weren't predicted either.......

textFoundation multi-millions fund ocean privatization campaigns by Dan Bacher
I can very much relate to Stolpe’s research. Environmental politics in California has become severely corrupted by all of the corporate money that flows from Hewlett Packard, Intel, Getty Oil, Bechtel, Walmart and other corporations into foundations. The corporations’ agenda for putting so much money into big NGOs is to coopt, corrupt and eviscerate much of what passes for “environmentalism” in California today, not to “save” fish populations....

textHaight Ashbury Neighborhood Center and Recycling - an institution to be proud of in SF. by Francisco Da Costa
The Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Center (HANC) is an institution that has been doing recycling, later composting and other greening processes for the longest time ever. It is simply WRONG for the San Francisco Recreation and Park to try to evict HANC - after all these years for NO concrete reason. I have been associated with HANC directly and indirectly for many years - going, back to the time when I worked at the Presidio of San Francisco and encouraged - Recycling....
