Four to a rowboat not six. FOUR to a rowboat, not six. Today I was in receivership of a really amazingly lame reminder about physics. Just the same, all of the potential and awesomeness abounded until I went in due to the fact that otherwise five people would have been stuck in the drink and capsized as the boat was taking on water. I guess urban cyclists really should stick to the streets....

After walking away from Plan A for Occupy Oakland's Move-In Day, reclaiming the abandoned Henry J Kaiser Convention Center for use as a community center, Occupy Oakland moved up 12th Street toward downtown. Turning left down Oak Street towards what might have been a Plan B building, marchers were met with a line of Oakland police at the intersection of Oak and 10th Street. Nevertheless, the march of over a thousand people slowly advanced toward the police line until police unleashed massive...

Occupy Oakland had intended January 28th to be Move-In Day, that is a vacant building of a nature suitable to serve as a new indoor home for the occupation was to be reclaimed for public use. A weekend Rise Up Festival was scheduled to follow the successful occupation of an abandoned building. Several potential locations were selected by the Move-In Day Assembly, although they were not publicly announced. Plan "A" apparently was the Henry J Kaiser Convention Center, but Oakland police trac...

textWhat really happened at Occupy Oakland on Saturday January 28 by reposted from Boogie Man Journal
For the internet, here's a first-hand account of Occupy Oakland on 1/28/2012, because the news never tells the full story. I'll tell you about the street battle, the 300+ arrests, the vandalism, the flag burning, all in the context of my experience today. This is deeper than the headlines. No major news source can do that for you. The stated goal for the day was to "move-in" to a large, abandoned, building to turn it into a social and political center. It is a long vacant convention center - ...

Our city is in crisis. The Bay area has a wider gap between rich and poor than most other metropolitan areas in the U.S. Nearly one out of five residents lives in poverty. Oakland’s schools, health programs, environmental programs, parks, recreation, libraries, and other services are strained by declining real revenues and a city budget dominated by funding for police, fire, and debt service. Other services are struggling. With the help of over 16 Occupy Oakland (OO) committees, our c...

by Occupy Oakland
Dear Mayor Jean Quan, Oakland Police Department, and Oakland City Council, As you probably know, Occupy Oakland is planning the occupation of a building on January 28th that will serve as a social center, convergence center, headquarters, free kitchen, and place of housing for Occupy Oakland. Like so many other people, Occupy Oakland is homeless while buildings remain vacant and unused. For Occupy this is in large part because of yourselves, having evicted us twice from public space that w...
