The ILWU Local 10 was the only union in the United States to take direct labor action to oppose the South African apartheid regime in 1984 when they refused to move South African cargo at Pier 80 in San Francisco. Their action was recognized by Nelson Mandela when he came to Oakland after release from prison and also the Local and ILWU Local 10 member Leo Robinson who was honored by the South African government with the Mandela award....
