The city of Oakland threatened to evict residents from the Housing and Dignity Village on December 5. Oakland police and city public works employees blocked off parking on S Elmhurst Ave to prepare for the eviction. But early in the morning gates to the community were locked and dozens showed up to place themselves between the encampment and police. The city backed down, promising to enter into new negotiations with residents....

The first Oakland mayoral debate of the 2018 election was sponsored by the Alameda County Democratic Party on August 23. Cat Brooks was widely viewed as the winner, with her command of the issues and passionate advocacy for a more just Oakland. Pamela Price and Saied Karamooz made strong showings as well. Libby Schaaf was defensive and tense, as she was in later debates. Schaaf eventually stopped attending candidate forums. (Full debate audio below.)...

Time flies. Today is election day already. On August 8, Cat Brooks wasn't speaking through a bullhorn outside of City Hall, or commenting at a City Council meeting. She was filing the official paperwork required to run for Mayor of Oakland. Since then, she and hundreds of campaign volunteers have poured their hearts into the "People's Campaign," reaching out to Oaklanders throughout the city, fighting hard for a just and equitable future Oakland....

Shortly after the completion of the construction of the second city-sanctioned Tuff Shed compound under the I-980 freeway at Northgate Avenue and 27th Street in April, the city of Oakland began evicting residents from the largest encampments in the surrounding area. Over the course of four days in May and June, the residents of 50-plus tents and shanty structures were forced out....
