YOU Can Help Put Executions on Hold!
Now is the time to tell your legislators to put executions on hold by supporting the "California Moratorium on Executions Act" (AB 1121) which would halt all executions while the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice is investigating the problem of wrongful conviction and the administration of the death penalty in California....

Help Stop Napa Vineyard from Killing Bears for Eating Grapes
Vineyard owner Paul Maroon has had four bears and two mountain lions officially killed by federal trappers because he says they destroyed fences surrounding his property, ate his grapevines and threaten his staff's safety. Instead of shooting the bears, Maroon could have simply used electrified fencing. Please ask your State Representative to revise the depredation permit policy so that vineyards are required to build electric fences before a permit is issued to kill animals....

Minutemen associated with Keith Gilbert
Remember way back in April when creepy paranoids Jim Gilchrist and Chris Simcox, fabricators of the Minutemen Project, fooled the laziest mainstream media outlets into marketing a couple hundred ignorant, cranky crackers as the vanguard of a bold, new movement of polite vigilantes concerned about immigration issues? In the dominant discourse, the Minutemen’s disavowal of racism went unchallenged. Even the impotent Governator, trying to hustle some California far-right brownie points, felt com...

California has Most Transgender Friendly Laws in U.S
On January 1, 2006 two new laws solidified California’s leadership role as the most protective state for transgender rights in the nation. The laws, sponsored by Equality California (EQCA), were AB 1400 (the Civil Rights Act of 2005) and AB 1586 (the Insurance Gender Non-Discrimination Act). AB 1400, authored by Santa Cruz Assemblyman John Laird, amended California’s public accommodation law to make clear that transgender people are protected. AB 1586, authored by Assemblyman Paul Koretz, pro...

Gang Killings Close to Home
It happened without any fanfare, weeks ago in Pomona. A young Latino boy, popular among kids of his age and a student at the Pomona Alternative School, attended a party with some friends. An overtone of hostility began to replace the enjoyment of the early evening, and the group of boys left to go home. They were followed. Expletives were shouted, followed by fists. Gunshots sounded and Bobby Guerrero fell, mortally wounded. The shooter was a member of an established gang, though nobody was a...

Conversations with Indian American: My California Vacation
Ethnic diversity is nothing new in California, although the state that denies its own history discovers its immigrants every decade. There has never been a decade in the state's history when its elites have not startled its population with a panic over its immigrants. Mexicans know this intimately, but so do Asians, and so do Central Americans. California might have an Austrian governor, but he is certainly not an immigrant. To be an immigrant today is to be of color; that's categorical....
