Commemoration of The 1980 SF Hotel Workers Strike & The Zim's Restaurant Workers Struggle In 1979 a militant rank and file movement helped organize a successful rank and file strike at the Zim's restaurant chain. This was followed up by a hotel workers strike in 1980. Hotel Housing Occupation in San Francisco Late this afternoon housing activists took over the long vacant 43-unit Sierra Hotel in San Francisco’s Mission District. The hotel has been empty for years and is in a state of disrepair though structurally sound. The takeover is “a collective act of homefulness” to protest government cuts of social services that will result in more people being out on the streets....

Eight Arrests in SF Protest over Shelter Closure, Looming Cuts Eight people were arrested in San Francisco today for occupying the city’s Human Services Agency in protest of the closing of a homeless shelter and the mistreatment of the people who had used its services, who were callously turned out on the streets.
