The current issue of Street Spirit newspaper (September 2012), which can be found in the main public library (or perhaps in a few days), features local activist and potential jailbird Lighthouse Linda Lemaster, writing her views on the activist takeover of the 75 River St. vacant bank building, leased by Wells Fargo. Lemaster goes to trial October 15th at 9 AM in Dept. 2 for peacefully supporting a Right-to-Sleep protest on the steps of the courthouse in August 2010....

While the SCPD police blog is bragging about homeless sweeps destroying hundreds of campsites for those who have no shelter alternatives, and cty officials are busy posting areas as "forbidden no trespass" zones used by homeless people for survival camping, the Wells Fargo Foreclosure machine is busy ripping off middle-class folks struggling to keep above water as the election eve circus bangs on, ignoring these issues. The Sentinel, for the first time in several years, is actually focusing...

Since 1996, the City had made unclaimed bicycles available for nonprofits to give away to youth in need. Earlier this year, without any public process or notification, the SCPD and Vice Mayor Hilary Bryant ended this program, diverting the bikes to the for-profit business the Bike Dojo, which also partners with a business owned by Bryant’s husband (Cruzin Pedicabs), and which is now selling many of the bikes to fund their program, in clear violation of City policy....

Here's some info on how to contact Gary Johnson, currently being held in the Rountree Jail facility out in Watsonville, which I got by phone today from Diana. Gary was found guilty of "lodging" for peaceful sign-carrying and sleeping at the PeaceCamp2010 demonstration. I think he'd appreciate letters in jail and $ on his books....

Andrea Morgan, a disabled 5'1" homeless woman, has been forced to sleep outside--something that is illegal for all homeless people in Santa Cruz. Excluded from the Homeless (Lack of ) Services Center [HLOSC] property programs, she called me this morning reporting she was robbed last night while she slept. Taken from her were her coat, purse, medications, ID, and other essentials. I interviewed her subsequently on my Free Radio show....

I have met many wonderful and dedicated activists throughout my experience with the Peace and Freedom Party, and hope to maintain many of those friendships in the upcoming years.
While my position with regard to this past weekend's PFP Convention may be unpopular, I feel obliged to express the motivation behind my resignation. My commitment to the Peace and Freedom Party extends as far as the Party's commitment to socialism....

On July 9th, the Santa Cruz Police Department and the department of Parks & Recreation and Public Works issued a joint press release announcing an impending sweep of homeless camps located within the City of Santa Cruz over the next 30-45 days. Apparently SCPD has identified specific individuals in these camps that they plan to target, and in addition to busting up the camps, SCPD also plans to arrest individuals who have previously been cited in association with various ordinances that ban s...

Gail Page organized a Community TV taping of an informative and lively forum discussing the Santa Cruz Eleven--activists and reporters targeted by the SCPD and D.A. Bob Lee in the wake of a peaceful occupation of a 3-years vacant Wells Fargo leased bank property last year. The audio portion of the show was broadcast on Free Radio Santa Cruz yesterday and is archived for those who want to hear it. Yesterday morning, on June 18, 2012, Mayor Don Lane left me a voicemail inviting me to converse with him on issues I have about the Homeless Services Center (HSC) and the River Street Emergency Shelter (RSES). Because I deeply believe in open, transparent government which is held accountable for its actions or lack of action, I am opening this up as a public conversation with my email response to Mayor Lane's invitation for a (personal) conversation. I hope that Mayor Lane will not take offen...

The violent slaying of Camouflage owner Shannon Collins prompted a wave of opportunistic political proposals responding to gentrification bigots and a series of proposed homeless service cutbacks, criminalizations, and controls. Mayor Don Lane and Homeless (Lack of) Services Center [HLOSC] Director Monica Martinez seem to have surfed along with these proposals as well as continuing their own collaboration with a criminalize-innocent-homeless-conduct agenda. In response I asked Lane for an i...
