Obama is arguing on the Republicans' turf; he has lost control of the debate. Obama has internalized the deficit hawks' frenzy; jobs and unemployment are eclipsed by the sole focus on reducing the deficit. We're arguing about cuts instead of reordering the economy. The horse is economic recovery. Once jobs are created, the deficit will gradually be reduced (Robert Kuttner)....

March 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Fire in New York city. One hundred and forty six mostly immigrant women and men burned to death or jumped from the building as a result of a fire in the garment factory. This event was a watershed in US labor history for labor and health and safety protective laws and this important event will be commemorated throughout the United States. One might think that a war is raging between politicians and public sector workers. Recently elected Republican governors have threatened to use the equivalent of weapons of mass destruction on state workers by passing legislation that would outlaw strikes, rescind the right to unionize and engage in collective bargaining, reduce pensions, and require workers to provide explicit agreement before their dues can be used for political campaigns....

In the last decades, wealth has concentrated in a few hands. The increasing inequality does not offend us; this inequality is the result of an active policy. The rich prevail; they are subsidized and relieved from contributions to the social infrastructure while social benefits are cut. The rich should not be envied. Their lifestyle is not a model that can be generalized....

The U.S. social and economic landscape is rapidly changing. Inequalities in wealth, which began an upward ascent back in the 1980s, accelerated in the 1990s. Now they are flying off the charts, thanks first to the tax cuts ushered in by Bush II and second to Obama’s recent continuation of those tax cuts, plus more, which have the effect of taking from the working class and poor in order to give to the rich....
