Students at UC Santa Cruz left the Hahn student services building today after occupying it for nearly 18 hours. Approximately 30 students decided as a group to leave; all of them were undergraduates. Before exiting the building they cleaned the area they occupied and then sang songs of solidarity and protest. The occupation was in support of UC workers and in continued opposition to the appointment of Janet Napolitano as president of the University of California system....

Graduate Student Workers at UC Santa Cruz announced on March 4 that, after two days of discussions, management has given in to all of their demands. The results: No more underpaid undergrad TAs, back pay ($6000 each) for all those who've already been in that position, serious reduction in TA workload for poorly planned Arts department classes, and a committee established to make recommendations for class-sizes with equal voices for labor and management....

On Saturday afternoon, urban farmers demonstrated at Sprouts grocery chain locations in Petaluma, Fremont, Sunnyvale, and Mountain View. UC Berkeley is planning to cut down a grove of 16 redwood trees as soon as March. The redwood trees behind Soda Hall, on Ridge Road and Le Roy Avenue are going to be replaced with the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, a privately funded tech design lab paid for by the CEO and Chairperson of the Board of Qualcomm Paul Jacobs. Qualcomm has representation on the UC Regents, through Sherry Lansing, who is both a regent and on the Qualcomm board of directors....
