Dr. Cornel West spoke at the student occupation of the Humanities and Social Sciences building at the University of California Santa Cruz on November 20. Students occupied the building earlier in the day and plan to stay inside until the UC Regents roll back the tuition increases they approved this week. Students at UC Santa Cruz this afternoon began an occupation of the Humanities and Social Sciences building. Hundreds of students participated in the march to the building, and an announcement was made that they plan to occupy it until tuition is rolled back. Today a committee of the UC Regents passed a plan by a 7-2 vote to increase tuition and fees for University of California students by at least 5% a year over the next five years. The UC Regents want to hike tuition again. At their upcoming meeting, they are planning to vote on a new policy that, if ratified, would make 5% annual tuition increases the default for the next five years. According to Napolitano, the tuition hikes (as much as $3,400 over five years) would go forward unless the state government increases UC's budget by amounts to be named later....

Oakland CA - Today, UC President Napolitano announced that she would recommend to the UC Regents a “five-year stability plan,” which would establish annual tuition and student fee increases of up to 5% for both undergraduate and graduate students. The UC Office of the President (UCOP) claims that tuition increase levels within this 5% would be contingent on funding from the state, and that these proposed increases could be reduced with more additional state investment....
