American Indian gives presentation in England on over 130-year legacy of Indian boarding schools where children were abused and their culture desecrated. Indian families were torn apart and tens of thousands of children were required to dress, pray, work and speak as mainstream Americans. The recent Mette foster care scandal provides even more damning evidence that South Dakota is abusing its power as a protector of children. When four Lakota foster girls in the Mette family's care testified that they were being brutally raped and abused, state officials didn't try to protect the girls—instead they tried to protect themselves. Then they accused two child advocates, who were the foster girls' most vocal allies, of making the children lie. They also dropped nearly every one of t...

Monsanto is fighting globally to take control of our food supply. They are doing their best work in the US, where they already control the government. But they will not be unopposed. On May 25, we will take to the streets, and turn the tables....

You cannot lift up a nation’s economy while slashing away at its consumers’ pocketbooks. In order to justify their defiance of this elementary law, both Repub...

On April 11 over 400 people packed the third public Portland Budget Hearing, which was organized by the City of Portland and which left many spilling out beyond the room where the hearing took place. More importantly, for the City Council there was an unexpected critical outpouring from the vast majority who attended. For the first time, the City Council and Mayor Charlie Hales began to lose control over their attempts to sell austerity....

Before Social Security and Medicare existed, the elderly were either completely dependent on their children or were left to beg in the streets. These programs thus remain sacred to the vast majority of Americans. They allow the elderly dignity and independence instead of poverty and insecurity....

We are witnessing a bi-partisan effort to destroy a self-sustaining program that has survived for 70 years, in spite of periodic "borrowing" by the general fund of the US government. Maybe it's time to call in those debts, rather than cut back our coverage. Social Security is just not an "entitlement", paid at will by the government. It is insurance paid with premiums deducted from your paycheck. Those deductions never were intended to lumped in with the rest of the federal budget....
