On January 9, 2005, outside a Ceres, CA liquor store, Andres Raya ambushed the police. Raya had earlier fired into the air, hid his assault rifle, and rushed into the store requesting police assistance. Raya shot and killed arriving Ceres police Sgt. Howard Stevenson, and seriously wounded officer Sam Ryno. Raya then fled. He died later following a cop stakeout and another confrontation, where he was shot eighteen times....

El 9 de Enero del 2005, en el parqueadero de una tienda de likor en Ceres, CA Andres Raya emboscó a la policía. Poco antes, Raya disparó al aire, escondió su rifle estilo “assault,” y entró la tienda pidiendo assistencia policíaca. Cuando llegaron, Raya disparó y mató Sgto. Howard Stevenson de la policía de Ceres y hirió gravamente Sam Ryno, policía de Ceres. Raya huyó y murió después de otra confrontación con la policía, en lo cual recibió 18 balas....

Jerry Brown has imposed a new 10pm curfew on probationers and parolees in Oakland, to seem "tough on crime" as part of his run for Attorney General. After the backlash and outrage this curfew generated, he and his staff have been furiously backpedalling, and fighting to make sure that the curfew is seen in a positive light. Michael Walker, the policeman who killed Rudy Cardenas, is on trial for murder in San Jose. January 28 there was a press conference before a hearing to dismiss charges, where Rudy's family, dressed in black, spoke to the press....
