The 11th annual Allied Media Conference (AMC) will be held July 16-19, 2009, on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, under the theme We Are Ready Now: Media and creativity to transform our selves and our world.

The International Socialist Organization held their first West Coast conference in San Francisco July 2nd through 5th. The "Socialism 2009: Building a New Left for a New Era" conference was split between the Women's Building on 18th and the ISO offices on Capp. Close to 800 people attended attended at least one session over the four-day conference, with most attending numerous. A similar conference has been held annually in Chicago for years. Chicago's 2009 conference was held in June.

Home on leave from Iraq in the summer of 2008, Army journalist Samantha Schutz decided to go AWOL rather than return to that country and be part of a war she opposed. With the help of a lawyer and a GI rights counselor, she arranged to turn herself in, and in June of 2009, Samantha was released from the Army with a general discharge under honorable conditions. This Courage to Resist interview with Samantha was recorded while she was still AWOL, waiting to turn herself in....
