Mayor Holds Up Housing Funds Despite Veto-Proof Vote at the Board
Two weeks ago, I questioned whether it makes sense to challenge Newsom for re-election this November. He’s a very popular Mayor who will be hard to beat, and we can still pass most of our agenda because the Supervisors often have eight votes to override a veto. So when the Board passed the $28 million housing supplemental on May 1st by an 8-3 vote, I expected it would become a reality. But in a shameful display of arrogance, Newsom allowed it to become law without his signature, but said that...

Medi-Cal's Share of Cost Does Not Match the Montly Housing Costs
Medi-Cal policy is imposing a share of cost that is unrealistic. Many Medi-Cal recipients are not on welfare but are offered assistance from the government because they make too much money to qualify for welfare but not enough to pay for health care costs. As a result, they must contribute to their healthcare by paying for a portion of the cost of the services they receive. The calculated amounts of share of costs for a family or individual do not consider the monthly housing costs in Calif...

My Country - 05/24/07 - Men & Healthcare - a (very) personal perspective
"Tonight's topic is 'Men and Health Care'. Now, before all the women viewers leave the room, let me add that I encourage you to stay for the men in your lives because most of them are likely to be diving for cover as soon as I bring up the 'T' word. That's 'T' as in parts of the male anatomy often referred to as family jewels or other terms of endearment but rarely by their real name by any men I know."...

Rent Board Rules in Favor of 1030 Post Street Tenants
After a year of struggling to save their homes, the tenants at 1030 Post Street can rest easy – they are covered by rent control, and the landlord’s scheme to make their units “affordable” by raising the rent is dead. On May 21st, an Administrative Law Judge at the San Francisco Rent Board ruled that the units are covered by the Rent Ordinance, as amended last fall by the Board of Supervisors. This concludes the saga of a real estate developer who manipulated a tax-exempt program to “create” ...

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi Supes to Hold Hearing on Public Housing “Emergency Transfers”
Imagine if you and your family were victims of a violent crime but had no way to escape it. Imagine lying awake at night worried about your young children’s safety while they slept. Imagine being scared to continue living in your apartment, but still paying rent for fear of losing the only chance of a roof over your head. Imagine forcing your children to play indoors on the sunniest of days, so that they won’t be dodging bullets in the yard. If your home were this unsafe, would you choose hom...

A Low-Income Bus Pass that Most Don't Use
Did you know that MUNI has a low-income Fast Pass? If you didn’t, you are not alone. In 2003, the cost of a monthly Fast Pass for MUNI went up from $35 to $45 and the cost of a single ride went from $1 to $1.25. The next year the single ride went up to $1.50. In response to public outrage, the MTA developed the Lifeline Fast Pass for low-income San Franciscans — a monthly bus pass for $35....
