On June 12, family members held a memorial for Derrick Gaines, a 15 year old who was shot and killed by an officer with the South San Francisco Police Department on the evening of June 5th. Police claim that Gaines, who was walking with a friend near an Arco gas station, was engaging in "suspicious behavior". They tried to stop him, and they say he ran and produced a gun. Protest at a Mitt Romney fundraising event caused a lot of commotion for people trying to gain entrance to the Sofitel Hotel in Redwood City, California on Monday. Some paid as much as $25,000 to attend, only to arrive at the hotel to find out the entrance was blocked by marching demonstrators; even activists from Occupy Oakland joined the rallying crowd. A giant Etch A Sketch with rotating messages was displayed in front of the hotel....

Protesters demonstrated against labor abuses in front of Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California during a shareholder meeting today. Demonstrators said that while Apple is setting revenue records, it is making only small concessions to treat workers in China better. Meanwhile, regular protests continue outside the Apple store in Palo Alto, where Apple co-founder Steve Jobs lived.

Apple announced on Monday that the Fair Labor Association (FLA) started its first inspections at a factory in Shenzhen, one of the largest plants in China, where many Apple products are manufactured. Questioning the effectiveness of FLA inspections, protest group the Raging Grannies delivered a message with street theater to the Apple store in Palo Alto.
