The recent execution of Angel Nieves Diaz in Jacksonville, Florida has outraged opponents of capital punishment nationwide due to the unusual length of time of the procedure and the apparent pain and suffering Angel Diaz appeared to experience. Stewart Alexander, with the Peace and Freedom Party, says, “The whole process of capital punishment is flawed and the PFP wants federal legislation to band capital punishment in all 50 states; too many mistakes have been made, it’s cruel and inhumane.”...

At the United Nations, the South Korean diplomat Ban Ki-Moon is preparing to become the next Secretary General replacing Kofi Annan who has served since 1996. Ban Ki-Moon officially assumes the role on January 1. Ban Ki-Moon will become the first Asian to lead the world body in 35 years. In his last weeks in office, Kofi Annan has repeatedly criticized the Bush administration"s foreign policy and the invasion of Iraq....

Julian Moti, former Solomon Islands attorney-general, was acquitted on December 13 of illegally entering the country without a passport. The court ruling is a blow to the Australian government, which launched a sustained witchhunt against Moti as part of its campaign against the Solomons’ government of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.
