January 21, 2006 - The second annual "Walk for Life" rally brought in thousands of right-wing christian fundamentalists and abortion opponents to San Francisco's waterfront. They were met by a determined group of pro-choice advocates and women's rights activists bearing green balloons and coathangers, letting them know their hypocritical right-wing pro-Bush patriarchal agenda is not welcome here....

With Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court and the Democratic Party giving up its strong pro-choice stand, it is likely that Roe vs. Wade will be weakened and perhaps fully overturned in the next decade. Abortion opponents are emboldened and are now organizing yearly marches in cities like San Francisco to show their clout. We celebrated 33 years of Roe v. Wade guaranteeing safe and legal abortions by protesting fascism in San Francisco as a few thousand mostly white petty bourgeois Bush supporters marched for fascism under the guise of opposing abortion. We were at least 10,000 strong, which is good, but we can and must do better. We must celebrate 34 years of legal abortion next year with a rally at Justin Herman Plaza and a march on Market street....

On Saturday January 21st, a crowd of over 10,000 abortion opponents gathered in San Francisco in Justin Herman Plaza. Pro-choice activists gathered a few blocks down near Pier 7. Around noon, the anti-abortion crowd started marching up Embarcadero and hundreds of police moved in to keep the pro-choice crowd ouut of the street as the right-wingers filled Embarcadero....

Judge Alito's unwillingness to stipulate that Roe v. Wade is "settled law", as recently confirmed Chief Justice Roberts had, puts a woman's right to choose in great peril. This factor alone should be enough for Senators to vote against his nomination....
