The US is stumbling in the Iraqi labyrinth
The other culprit in American leaders' rosy outlook is the need to tell "the good news" about Iraq to the American public. But the battle for Iraq has always been as much outside of that country as within. Iraq was to be either an inspiring model for the people of the Middle East in pursuit of democracy or an example of American resolve. Those goals may yet be met. But for now, the pictures of unrest and the American crackdown work against the US in the Middle East and elsewhere....
