UC workers are paid so little that they depend on welfare to get by
First the governor proposed a rule change that could eliminate lunch breaks for California workers. Now, if a new report about the University of California is correct, it seems lunchroom workers themselves are paid so little at UC campuses that many of them qualify for nine public subsidies for the poor, including food stamps and public housing....

Schwarzenegger Threatens California State Teachers Retirement System
Four big squares marked “vacant” sat alongside photos of remaining board members on the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) web site this week. It seems the squares’ former occupants (two Republicans and two Democrats) had the nerve to vote against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposal to privatize pensions of all new state workers, including teachers, into a 401(k)-type system starting in 2007, and his proposal to shift onto local school districts the state’s contribution t...

Welcoming Chancellor Denton to UC Santa Cruz (video/quicktime 33.6MB)
On February 14th (Valentine's Day), the Student & Worker Coalition for Justice, AFSCME Service Workers, CUE Clericals, and other campus unions "welcomed" incoming Chancellor Denise Denton on her first day at UCSC.
Several hundred students and workers marched from McHenry Library to Kerr Hall. At Kerr, the Budget Office was noisily occupied, with the large crowd flowing out onto the upper patio.

Community control vs. state control: Stopping the occupation and privatization of OUSD
The second, and perhaps most crucial, phase of the colonial occupation and transformation of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) was initiated in December 2004. Administrator Randy Ward, the neo-colonial operative executing the dismantling of OUSD on behalf of big business and the government, proclaiming that 13 schools are slated for closure and charter conversion, initiated it. The aim of this phase of the occupation is to destroy the unions and create the necessary preconditions to ...

David Horowitz at UC Berkeley Feb 3
Well, I have modest mouse tickets that night, and I saw him the last time. There should be some good people watching dynamics if you can sit through this.
