Media Alliance joined with numerous other organizations to urge City officials to press for stronger public interest provisions in light of yesterday's announcement that Google/ Earthlink won the bidding process to build a citywide Wi-fi network. Looking at the Free Press's list of the stations running corporate press releases as news (http://www.prwatch.org/map/TV_Stations), they include one SF station, the CBS affiliate. But it seems there's a lot more of this (and at least one more flavor) than even they realize. Here was the headline in Wednesday's SF Chronicle: "Cash-strapped KRON is letting advertisers buy into news broadcasts. The boss says it's just a sign of the times."
Curiously, one of the quotes in the story...

The panel included journalists from a number of U.S. and international newspapers as well as Lt. Col. Steve Boylan, the former chief military spokesman in Iraq. A new study being released today by the Center for Media and Democracy found at least 77 TV stations around the country has aired corporate-sponsored video news releases over the past 10 months. The report accuses the TV stations actively disguise the content - which has been paid for by companies like General Motors, Panasonic and Pfizer -- to make it appear to be their own reporting. Summary: Following recent demonstrations in which protesters marched against proposed legislation that would criminalize undocumented workers, some in the media have criticized the demonstrators for carrying Mexican flags. But these same media figures have not complained about people waving other nations' flags, such as Irish flags at St. Patrick's Day events, Italian flags at Columbus Day events, or Israeli flags at Israel Day events....
