To Live and Let Live in South L.A.
The national debate over immigration reform has spotlighted simmering tensions between black and Latino communities, among other discords. Lost in the rancor are the voices of longtime black and Latino community leaders who insist that harmony is possible. A close look at South Los Angeles -- a community that was literally transformed in a decade by immigration -- shows the key role these leaders and old-fashioned community organizing play in tempering group rivalries at times of unsettling c...

Youth Memoir About Coming of Age in Youth Authority Indicts System
One interesting aspect of a memoir is that its beginning is, in many ways, the end - the point to which a sequence of written memories ultimately lead. In Dwight Abbott’s introduction we learn that the manuscript for his memoir, “I Cried You Didn’t Listen” was written in a maximum-security prison cell in Oregon, at the time part of a solution California initiated in response to the growing problem of prison gangs in the state. Mr. Abbott was then an acknowledged founding member of the ‘Aryan ...

After Years In Limbo -- More Immigrant Detainees Choose 'Voluntary' Deportation
Disappeared in America is a new, regular feature profiling immigrants who've been detained or deported and whose cases illustrate unjust or inhumane features of the Department of Homeland Security's immigration and detention systems. The first report chronicles the story of a Sikh man who chose to be deported back to India, where he had been tortured, rather than languish in limbo in detention in California. Camille T. Taiara is editor of NAM's "Disappeared in America" series and reports on i...
