Friday, March 28, 2008 :A federal appeals court Thursday refused to overturn the conviction of imprisoned journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu Jamal and rejected his call for a new trial. However the long-awaited ruling said Abu-Jamal, who has been on death row for 26 years, deserves a new sentencing hearing because of flawed jury instructions. If he is resentenced he will face either death or life in prison without parole. We speak to Abu Jamal's lead attorney, Robert Bryan....

Friday, March 28, 2008 :Since its election last November, the Rudd government has substantially expanded the previous Howard government’s police-military intervention into indigenous communities across the Northern Territory (NT), with full assistance from the NT Labor government. Behind the cloak of the national “apology” that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd offered to indigenous people last month for the genocidal crimes committed against them over the past two centuries, Labor has stepped up the...

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 :Will there be no end to this tiresome "national conversation" as to whether a black man trumps a white woman, or vice versa, on our nation's list of the wronged? One possible end might arrive, of course, when another white man is elected in November and American politics returns to business as usual....

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 :The same day that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama stood in Philadelphia delivering a stirring speech on racism in America, authorities shut down a section of I-95 in that city to conduct emergency repairs on a crumbling support beam. In many ways this serious infrastructure damage to the East Coast's main north-south interstate highway--causing that closure--is as symbolic of conditions in America as the race-based 'Rev. Wright' controversy trig...

“This whole thing is so twisted. You’ve got the victims—Sean and the other two with him that night—being attacked like they’re the criminals, and the criminals—the cops who killed Sean—being treated like they’re the victims. But you know, I’ve been at other trials of police who’ve murdered Black people and here’s the thing. It plays out pretty much the same way every time.”...

Thursday, March 20, 2008 :The widely publicized speech Tuesday by Barack Obama on race relations in the United States was another exercise in walking the political tightrope for the Democratic candidate in his closely contested struggle with Hillary Clinton for the party’s presidential nomination. Obama made the speech after two weeks of attacks on the views of his long-time minister, Rev....

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 :Last week, the BBC ran its “White Season”—a series as puerile as it was offensive. Billed as an exploration of “what it means to be white and working-class in 21st century Britain,” the trailer summed up the central message. A close-up facial shot of a white, bald and obviously working class male was shown....

In this new interview (03/08), Ramona Africa talks about observing the MOVE 9 trial, before she actually became a member of MOVE. The video also features archival footage from the documentary "MOVE," made by Cohort Media, and narrated by Howard Zinn. The intro spotlights the public beating of Delbert Africa, while the conclusion features the illegal destruction of MOVE's house and the fraudulent "conspiracy" charge used to convict the MOVE 9....

All 9 MOVE men and women were convicted in one of the longest (and most contentious) trials in city history, on dubious charges of 3rd degree murder of a city cop engaged in the raid on their home, and related charges. Even if all the charges were true (and they most certainly are not), the sentence 30 to 100 years can only be termed grossly excessive. At the time of trial, 3rd degree carried a sentence of 71/2 to 15 years --so essentially the MOVE people got more than double, and indeed, qua...

There’s a lot of people right now excited about the fact that Barack Obama could be the first Black president. People hope that if he becomes president, there could be someone in the White House who will bring about real change—including ending the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and doing something about the destruction of the environment, the horrific oppression of Black people and other minority nationalities, the Gestapo round-ups of immigrants, and the attacks on fundamental rights.
