imageMayor Watkins Blocks Food Not Bombs Proclamation
by Santa Cruz News
Mayor Martine Watkins has blocked a city proclamation proposed to honor the work of Food Not Bombs in Santa Cruz. In a letter to Councilmember Chris Krohn, Watkins stated it would not be "appropriate" to issue a proclamation honoring Food Not Bombs because the organization is "suing the city". Santa Cruz Food Not Bombs has provided information in support of the plaintiffs in Quntero v. the City of Santa Cruz, a civil right lawsuit filed on April 9 by a group of homeless residents of the Ross ...

imageHighway Buddha's Toby Gray Says Homeless Camp Residents Can "Evacuate to the Highway"
by Bobby McGee
As the front-man of the band "Highway Buddha", Toby Gray sings and plays Woodstock-generation cover songs to small audiences on the Central Coast. For the past 20 years he has also been a member of the iconic 1960's era musical group "It's A Beautiful Day", a band that is part of psychedelic music history. The image of Toby Gray is that of a happy, smiling, beret-wearing hippy song man, however it wouldn't necessarily be a "beautiful day" for the homeless residents of the Ross Camp, or homele...

by Dan Bacher
Missing from the press releases from the Santa Barbara County DA’s Office, Attorney General’s Office and environmental groups and the superficial press coverage of the spill, the investigation, the jury trial and sentencing is one of the biggest and most ironic stories regarding the Refugio Oil Spill. In a classic example of the deep regulatory capture that pervades what passes for “marine protection” in California, the head of the oil industry trade association, the Western States Petroleum ...
