Registered nurses employed by Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Center (Sutter/CPMC) won a major victory over their employer, when a federal district court judge ruled that CPMC is compelled to restore health benefits retroactive to Jan. 1, 2007, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC) announced today. Several hundred RNs will receive the retroactive benefits....

Thursday, August 6, 2009 : A large cadre of Cantonese speaking UNITE HERE Local 2 members, many with family members who are San Francisco SEIU home care workers, are joining NUHW’s efforts to qualify for a decertification election against SEIU this fall. Nearly half of SEIU’s 17,000 member bargaining unit is Cantonese speaking, and the influx of Local 2 members – who have deep roots in the city’s Asian-American community – is a major boost to NUHW’s campaign....

Thursday, August 6, 2009 : It’s official. With the new state budget, the City is losing more money from Sacramento this year than what we have gained from Washington. President Obama’s stimulus means that San Francisco is getting $92 million more from the federal government than last year, but the combined February and June budgets from Sacramento took $98 million away....

In yet another example of the Schwarzenegger administration's top-down approach to controlling California's coastal waters, an email soliciting nominations for the North Coast Science Advisory Team (SAT) gives locals barely two weeks to try to impact composition of the powerful body charged with providing scientific information on the proposed North Coast Marine Protected Area (MPA). North Coast ocean activists are protesting the August 14 deadline in a widely-criticized Marine Life Protectio...

Monday, August 3, 2009 : While California’s poor, elderly and children suffer the consequences of the new state budget, Arnold’s friends at the San Francisco Chronicle are going for the kill. Yesterday’s front-page story about the state’s “long spending spree” was so biased and misleading that it could have been written by the right-wing Howard Jarvis Taxpayer’s Association....

Once again the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) is using Dog and Pony shows to outreach the HURTING Bayview Hunters community presenting information in a nonchalant manner in the year 2009. The BAAQMD has with INTENT not responded to the Bayview Hunters Point community on exceedances generated by a Rogue Developer Lennar that has been harming the community since 2003. BAAQMD officials made a back door deal with Lennar and fined them a measly $515,000 instead of $38 million fo...

Friday, July 31, 2009 : I parked a few blocks away and was on the lookout for hotel workers to lead my way to UNITE-HERE Local 2’s July 23 contract convention in San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Since 1986, the union has successfully used these massively attended conventions to mobilize its membership on the eve of contract fights....

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 : Gavin Newsom’s bid for Governor suffered a potential blow this week, with the exit of long-time campaign manager Eric Jaye. Under Jaye’s tutelage, the Newsom campaign cultivated the image of a “fresh face” to contrast with Jerry Brown – and heavily courted the netroots and small donors in the Democratic Party....

Propostion G was pushed by Lola Whittle, Angelo King, Sophie Maxwell, Aurelious Walker, James Bryant and a host of other mostly Black sell outs. The proponents of Proposition F will always be the same Francisco Da Costa and James Queen. Mayor Gavin Newsom, Senator Diane Feinstein, and a host of other very corrupt politicians endorsed Proposition G. Lennar spent over $5 million on Prop G and it is going no where. Prop F still has the support of the majority of Bayview Hunters Point constituent...

Monday, July 27, 2009 : It’s been a grueling seven months for San Francisco’s progressive Board majority. The joyous celebrations on election night last November, soon followed by the election of David Chiu as Board President, appeared to foreshadow a strong year for progressive unity. But the state and local financial meltdown put Supervisors on the spot....

Hundreds gathered in front of City Hall today to support Raymond Chow who has vowed to help the youth, all communities in San Francisco, and continue doing good. Recently, the City and County of San Francisco first gave and then took away a measly grant to the Ghee Kung Tong organization. Then also hurled abuses on Raymond Chow for no reason what so ever. Joining the fray the naive District 3 Supervisor, David Chiu. City Hall better respect the constituents of China Town, the Chee Kung Tong ...

Five prominent figures talk about the Commons. The five are Matt Gonzalez, SF City Assessor Phil Ting, SF Bay View Editor Willie Ratcliff, a member of the SFUSD School Board, and Australian economist Karl Fitzgerald. The Commons is the material universe including the land underneath us all, water, the atmosphere, and the radio frequency spectrum. Mineral deposits such as coal, oil and iron ore, land under commercial and residential structures, and fish in the sea are each and all examples of ...
