Oakland educators are amazing people who perservere in tremendously difficult teaching conditions. A few years ago the Oakland Unified School District reported that 30% of teaches in Oakland left the school district every year due to the challenges of teaching there. The OEA also does a fantastic job in building a stronger community and fighting for education justice in Oakland. When the OEA states that it is going on strike we can be sure that this is not about self-interes...

Over 250 protestors took to the streets of downtown Oakland for an unscripted direct action March following the March 4 "Day of Action." Protestors march in the streets of downtown Oakland, past the UC Office of the President all the way tothe 880 freeway, where they later took over the freeway. 150 people were arrested....

Towards the end of the March 4 'Day of Action' to Defend Public Education, over 150 people took over an Oakland freeway in a direct action that caused traffic to be shut down for an hour. When police closed in on protestors, some began hitting students with their clubs in their legs, arms and backs....

The following are a very small sample of the wounds inflicted by OPD on March 4th. These photos show the legs of three women who were beaten, taken over 48 hours after having been attacked by the Oakland Police Department. No one fought the police but the police unleashed their batons upon anyone within swinging distance regardless of size, age, or gender. Oakland police beat people already on the ground. OPD taunted people as they beat them....

The Oakland riot police swept in and without a call for dispersal started swinging batons and beating people before arresting them. The highway was shut for over two hours with traffic gridlocked across the Bay Area. Corporate journalists covering the action were allowed to leave while the independents were rounded up along with demonstrators....

I was a legal observer at the March 4th rallies and was doing legal observation on the march that ended up blocking 880. I did not go on the highway, as many people who were on the march chose to not go when we saw this decision being made. I am very concerned at the message below and felt a need to respond....

Protests in the East Bay saw broad participation from university students, faculty, workers and staff, public school teachers, middle school and high school students, and delegations from Japan, Brazil, and Germany. Protesters denounced the privatization of public education, budget cuts, teacher layoffs, and cut programs. A march from Berkeley to downtown Oakland was followed by a smaller snake march through rush hour traffic that ended with the occupation of the 880 freeway....
