The recent visit of Mohandas K. Gandhi's grandson, Arun Gandhi, to Palestine has sparked new discussion about the role of nonviolence in the Palestinian struggle for freedom. In a speech before the Palestinian Legislative Council, Gandhi called upon 50,000 Palestinian refugees to march back home en masse from their exile in Jordan, forcing the Israelis to choose between relenting to a wave of people power, or gunning the marchers down in cold blood....

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon this week made a clear threat to assassinate Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in an interview to mark the Jewish New Year holiday.
Sharon reiterated an earlier threat to expel Arafat from the Palestinian territories at a “convenient” time. But he went on to stress that he saw no difference between Arafat and Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who was assassinated by Israel in March, and Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, who was killed the following month....

Obeid slammed the U.S. Congress' latest call on Syria to withdraw from Lebanon and U.S. criticism of Syria and Lebanon on human rights grounds. "The U.S. Congress would do better to focus on human rights violations in the West Bank and in Iraq."
He said Lebanon was being asked to deal with the issue of the national anti-Israeli resistance without bearing in mind that there is Lebanese land still under Israeli occupation....

The meetings came in the wake of a World Bank report on the repercussions of Mr Sharon's plan to unilaterally withdraw settlers from the Gaza strip and four West Bank colonies while reinforcing Israel's control over other parts of the occupied territories.
