THE US and Britain yesterday remained isolated on the 15-member UN Security Council as the only ones which support forcibly disarming Iraq.
Three key permanent members - France, Russia and China, with veto powers over a second resolution which could lead to war - voiced grave reservations about military action. All said the work of the weapons inspectors must go on to avoid war....

As the US prepares for war in Columbia North Korea and Iraq a new boogieman has emerged: "France is no longer an ally of the United States and the NATO alliance "must develop a strategy to contain our erstwhile ally or we will not be talking about a NATO alliance" the head of the Pentagon's top advisory board said in Washington Tuesday" Having said this, the Pentagon adviser goes on to suggest the US never again go to the security council before going to war....

Colin Powell's presentation at the UN Security Council on Wednesday is likely to be strong on quantity and weak on quality - with little or no new information, and little or no actual proof of the presence of WMDs in Iraq, or links between the Iraqi government and al Qaeda. There will be lots of photographs, charts, and barely-audible sound-bites ostensibly demonstrating links between Iraq and al Qaeda or other terrorists....
