textKlamath River Restoration Begins by Dan Bacher
Here is the press release from the Karuk Tribe about the environmental review of the plan to restore the Klamath River. “We’ve studied the problem to death,” says Leaf Hillman, Natural Resources Director for the Karuk Tribe. “We believe that when viewed through the lense of objective science, only one conclusion can be reached and that’s to implement these agreements. Otherwise none of the communities and economies on the Klamath River can survive.”...

imageMLPA Initiative will do nothing to stop a big oil spill off California
unknown-1.jpeg
by Dan Bacher
John Lewallen, a well-respected North Coast environmental leader and co-founder of the Ocean Protection Coalition and the grassroots Seaweed Rebellion, has been a staunch opponent of offshore oil drilling for decades. He said that Schwarzenegger's MLPA Initiative not only fails to protect the California Coast from offshore oil drilling, but “paves the way for new offshore oil rigs.”...

textMLPAi I hav lived my whole life 52 years i know when corperate is takeing control from us. by Michael A. Carpenter
I have been involved in the MLPAi for a year now, spent to much time to much money and to much anger. We DID not vote on this they added the i to the end to make people think they did since it is ten years old.I supported it they way it was intended a seven page law,but of course just a few lines made it hijakable to who has the most money. If it were anything like what it should have been it would already be done and it would not cost any where near what it will....

imageGroups File Suit Against Arnold’s MLPA Initiative

by Dan Bacher
There is no doubt that Schwarzenegger’s MLPA Initiative is an out-of-control, lawless process that must be stopped. The May 28 lawsuit will hopefully mark the beginning of a series of lawsuits by the many diverse communities under siege by the MLPA Initiative. Photo of Danaka (Stewarts Point) by Violet Wilder, Kashia Pomo tribal member. The MLPA Initiative, in a gross miscarriage of justice, has banned the Kashia Pomo Tribe from harvesting seaweed and shellfish off Danaka, a site sacred to...

textYou Are Not A Democratic Body - Welcome To California Corporate State Waters by Tomas DiFiore
Biodiversity Hotspots, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Nature Conservancy, the NRDC, MAXXAM, ENRON, Governor Gray Davis, Barry Munitz, Dr. John Mick Seidl - A lineage of conspiracy, manipulation to capitulation - control, and now fishery fascism disguised as an open and transparent process. And knowing that the effectiveness and contribution (towards conservation) of MPAs to the marine ecosystem is determined by fishery management outside of MPAs... This leads on ... to the next valida...

textTribes Faced With MLPA Closures Walk Traditional Route for Food Gathering by Dan Bacher
For thousands of years, tribes have gathered seaweed, mussels, abalone and fish from the inter-tidal zone for subsistence and ceremonial purposes. However, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process has shown no respect for the religious, subsistence and ceremonial rights of coastal tribes....

"WSPA has not taken a position on specific offshore projects," stated Catherine Reheis-Boyd, president of the Western States Petroleum Association and the chair of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's MLPA Blue Ribbon Task Force for the South Coast. "But we have been vocal about our views that California businesses and consumers would benefit from development of the huge reserves of petroleum off the California coast, in both state and federal waters."...

audioMendocino Redwood Company Holds Public Meeting on New THP Process (audio/mpeg 6.6MB) by Christina Aanestad
Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) is changing the way the company personnel drafts Timber Harvest Plans, and they’re looking for public input. The change would stream line the THP process with a property wide assessment of the land to base all THPs on. President Jim Holmes says much of the information in THP's is "redundant" and the process would be a cost and time saving measure. Next MRC will draft an 80 year overall all, timber management plan....

The release of juvenile salmon from Nimbus Fish Hatchery occurs at a time when Central Valley salmon are in their greatest crisis ever, due to a variety of factors led by increased water exports out of the California Delta in recent years. Only 39,530 adult fall chinook salmon returned to the Sacramento River and its tributaries in 2009, the lowest run on record, spurring the closure of ocean recreational and commercial fishing in 2008 and 2009. This photo shows the fish weir and fish lad...
