(Geneva, April 1, 2008) – The Ethics Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should articulate human rights standards for host countries to end the moral void in which it operates, Human Rights Watch said in a letter released today. The IOC, which is scheduled to hold meetings in Beijing from April 1 to April 12, has refused to publicly articulate concerns about the human rights situation in China....

Saturday, March 29, 2008 : On March 14, the otherworldly calm of Lhasa, Tibet's holy city, was shattered by riots and gunfire. The spark that triggered unrest in the Tibetan part of what is now a largely ethnic Han Chinese city is unclear, but occurred somewhere near the Ramoche Temple when Chinese security forces attempted to stop a demonstration by monks....

Sunday, March 30, 2008 :The latest protests in Tibet and crackdown by Chinese authorities have brought up the usual sermonizing in the West about Chinese government oppression and illegitimate control of the Tibetans. Although I have little love for the Chinese leaders -- I think they run a cruel system -- some proper historical perspective is called for here....

Friday, March 21, 2008 :(London) British writer and self-styled dandy Sebastian Horsley was denied entry to the United States after arriving to promote his memoir of sex, drugs and flamboyant fashion. Horsley said he was questioned for eight hours Tuesday by border officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey before being denied entry on grounds of "moral turpitude." Council member Rotkin's "Unruly Assemblies" ordinance, the "Party at Your Peril" law, comes up for modification on March 11th at the evening city council meeting. Coonerty and Rotkin are moving to liberalize the ordinance with four changes. The real question, of course, is whether there should be such an ordinance at all and what kind of suffering it has inflicted.
