At least one northern California labor council has already started its special election campaign activity. On July 30, precinct walkers gathered at the South Bay Labor Council’s San Jose headquarters before fanning out to talk with union families about what’s at stake in the Nov. 8 special election called by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Precinct walking continues on weekends, and phone banking started Aug. 1....

I was at this protest and it was impressive for this town - one person was up most of the night making a sign for her dog to wear, one guy was running around to give water to everyone and put flyers into people's car windows at the stoplights (he keeps a running tab on the yes and no positions of the speakers at the council meetings and says its far ahead for the no's, but the council doesn't care), people self-organizing to place themselves on corners and keep moving all around, balloons tha...

Senator Dianne Feinstein’s attack on the Board of Supervisors yesterday for barring the homeporting of a warship here revealed a profound disconnect between her values and those of the people who live in her native city. With the largest gay population per capita of any major American city, San Franciscans stand entirely opposed to any institution preventing LGBTQ people from openly declaring and living out their identity. Historically, our city can be cited as one of the most vehemently anti...

Okay, it wasn't literally a war zone, just a bunch of extremely loud fireworks in every direction. As the very real war in Iraq continues to take lives and waste resources, Americans across the country delighted themselves in jingoistic small-town parades and/or shows of light and thunder in the night sky. In Oakland, neighborhood fireworks give the professional displays a run for their money. The threats of "zero-tolerance" for fireworks made by authorities beforehand apparently failed to...
