On May 11th, Supervisor Chris Daly sent out a “save-the-date” e-mail to progressive allies for a Mayoral Convention on Saturday, June 2nd – calling it “the most important progressive gathering of the year.” At the Convention, progressives will “consolidate our platform, train in the nuts and bolts of electioneering, launch our candidate(s) for Mayor of San Francisco, and have lots of fun!” With no serious candidate ready to challenge Gavin Newsom this November, many will say that this Convent...

On May 11th, The Black Packet initiated an action in the San Jose/South bay area in support of an independent investigation of the crimes of 9-11-01. 10 people from around the Bay Area showed up to distribute information and talk to people walking by at the south end of Cesar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose. Brian brought along the giant "9/11 Commission Report" with the holes in it (pictured below) , some signs, and two large twin towers with the bill of rights and constitution going down w...

Tomorrow, Mayor Newsom will hold his 5th neighborhood “Town Hall” as he avoids the voter-approved Question Time at the Board of Supervisors. This month, it will be in West Portal. If you didn’t know about it, you’re not alone. The Mayor’s Office sent a press release this week announcing it with little fanfare. Most of the media ignored the last one, and for good reason. There really is nothing left to report, as these “Town Hall lectures” are just city-funded campaign events for a Mayor who i...

When political observers think of problems with voting rights, hanging chads in Florida, Ohio’s harsh restrictions on voter registration, and touch screen voting problems come to mind. But San Francisco has its own obstacle to voting: landlords’ refusal to allow Get out the Vote activities in the city’s single room occupancy hotels (SRO’s). Since door-to-door voter outreach has proven the single biggest factor in increasing turnout among low-income, infrequent voters, the denial of such outre...

The Bush Administration declared a war against women the day it was sworn in, said feminist leaders of the San Francisco Green Party (SFGP) today. President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney need to be impeached immediately, urged the Feminist Issues Group (FIG), a working group of the SFGP. While pressure from the grassroots to impeach Bush and Cheney continues to build, FIG criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her failure to act and for declaring the impeachment issue "off the tabl...

Thousands gathered at Ocean Beach Saturday morning to spell out IMPEACH NOW! in the sand with their bodies. The event was coordinated with other impeachment events nationwide on April 28, and included a Code Pink march to Nancy Pelosi’s house....

Anyone trying to discover why Mayor Gavin Newsom is politically unbeatable in November need only examine the events of recent weeks. There was a Muni meltdown over the failed start of the “T” line, the City Attorney reported that the woman the Mayor had an affair with was allowed to sign her own timesheets (while others were approved by her husband), the city’s public housing crisis remains unaddressed, and gun violence broke out in multiple neighborhoods. But none of these issues “stuck” to ...

I’m serious. While Bush Street in San Francisco was not named after our current President, it is ironic to have a City that has never supported this Administration to have a street with the same name. Residents and tourists alike are reminded of George Bush when they see it, and with America’s image tarnished by his actions it can only be a bust – not a boost – to our local economy. Street names have been changed before, and there is no reason why the City can’t afford the nominal cost to mod...

Four of the five supervisors on the Budget and Finance Committee (Ammiano, Daly, Dufty and Mirkarimi) as well as the Mayor’s budget director (Nani Coloretti) were the guests of honor at yesterday's monthly Senior Action Network (SAN) meeting at St. Mary’s Cathedral. They were present to weigh in on the Aging and Disability community’s section of the 2007 Peoples Budget. Because of the Brown Act, no more than 2 Supervisors could be in attendance at one time so their appearances had to be stagg...

Battles at City Hall defy logic – we have small fights over big issues, and big fights over small issues. Last year, the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors came together to pass universal heath care with unanimous support. For a bold proposal that will impact the lives of thousands of San Franciscans, it was heartening to see it just sail through....

Following is a letter to Santa Cruz Mayor Emily Reilly demanding she redo an item on which she improperly excluded public comment at the last City Council meeting in February.
It involved the reading of a Proclamation and the presenting of an Award to Officer Jim Howes.
Following my Brown Act demand letter is a letter by Peter Scheer from the California First Amendment Foundation warning Mayor Reilly in advance that he believed her action violated state law....

Three (potential) candidates running for District 9 Supervisor in November 2008 discussed issues affecting residents at a Harvey Milk Club PAC meeting last night. The idea was not to have a candidates’ debate – but to have an issue-based discussion on housing, tenants’ rights, crime, and education....

Today Josh Wolf was freed from prison after releasing the video that was demanded by a grand jury investigating the aftermath of a protest on July 8th, 2005. The US attorney who
eventually gave Josh his leave is distinguished only by his crusade against civil rights under the Bush administration - and his recent appointment in California may be nothing more than a political quid pro quo....
