Things are also getting worse for the neediest people in the state...
Brownback’s official response to the state’s poverty problem was a brief report that advocated fighting poverty by encouraging traditional family structures through eight-hour “pre-marital education” classes for couples wishing to wed, kicking tens of thousands of residents off of food stamps so that they will work harder, and finding mentors for the state’s kids....

Wal-Mart is one of only a few major retailers that have refused to sign on to the new safety standards after the Dhaka tragedy. In the fire, in Tazreen Fashion fire, it has killed 112 workers and left hundreds injured. And in Rana Plaza, it killed 1,127 and left more than 600 or 700 injured for lifetime. And in that shareholder meeting, they haven’t even given any condolence for those families. They haven’t felt sad. No word for those....

On May 2, 2014, 39 people died in the Odessa House of Trade Unions in a terrible fire set by fascist friends of Democrat Obama and Republican McCain. The argument that the Democrats somehow prevent fascism has been eliminated; they support fascism, the same as the Republicans. In fact, both the Democrats and Republicans proudly announce they have no difference in foreign policy and they both support the Nazi and Confederate flag wavers in Ukraine. These fascists now sit in power in Ukraine...

When the Global Climate Convergence announced the Earth Day to May Day series of events and actions, it revealed a gap between daily reality and Hallmark posturing. More than 100 actions—such as the occupation of the DEQ in Portland, Oregon, by Rising Tide—have taken place in dozens of cities as part of the Climate Convergence.

Everybody, it seems, wants to raise the minimum wage. From President Obama giving federal employees a raise to $10.10 an hour, to the Fight for $15, to a number of actual and attempted raises in various cities (the exact numbers falling in between the above two amounts) there seems to have been an outbreak of altruism throughout the country. What is behind all of this?...

Concerns about state capture are nothing new. Special interests hold undue sway over official decision-makers in many countries, and regulators are always prone to see the world through the eyes of the people whose activities they are supposed to oversee. But the rise of finance in industrialized countries has cast these issues in a new, much harsher light....

Bangladesh has a $20 billion garment industry, said a Washington Post article, “A year after Rana Plaza: What hasn’t changed since the Bangladesh factory collapse.” A study at La Trobe University in Australia found that more than 78 percent of Bangladesh’s export earnings come from the garment industry. The World Bank’s website shows Bangladesh’s 2012 GDP as $115.6 billion, and a huge portion of that comes from the garment industry....

We recognize that violence is not always a meeting between bullet and body — or baton and body — a bruising of the flesh, a scarring of skin. Criminalization is a form of violence. It is an expulsion from society, a removal of the protection of “us.” When Chancellor George Blumenthal wrote, in his email to the UCSC campus, that the administration’s decisions to arrest 22 students “were reasoned, balanced, and in support of the entire campus,” he was consciously excluding those students from t...

Washington, DC—The Animal Welfare Institute is pleased to report that a panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District Of Columbia Circuit on April 11 denied SeaWorld of Florida’s petition for review of the citation issued in August 2010 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The demonization of anyone who talks about the dangers of concentrated wealth is based on a misreading of both the past and the present. Such talk isn’t un-American; it’s very much in the American tradition. And it’s not at all irrelevant to the modern world. So who will be this generation’s Teddy Roosevelt? (Paul Krugman)...
