Jimmy Carter, who has made a second career monitoring elections in world trouble spots, yesterday accused Florida Republicans of "brazenly" resisting efforts to clean up "fraudulent and biased electoral practices" that so marred the 2000 election in their state.
The former Democrat president offered a harsh verdict on Florida's prospects for a free and fair election this November, writing in the Washington Post that: "A repetition of the problems of 2000 seems like...

I read this letter today and it stuck in my head because of this one statement (following) that is so candid. I was sort of amazed that the Chron printed it, but then, their goal seems to be to polarize the readership, so this would be good for that. The only sad part is that neither this writer, much of the world, nor the US Kerry voters seem to grasp that 'stopping' Bush - in whatever way - will not stop the machine that is now started and moving full steam ahead. We've already sold out ...

There will be "elections" coming up in 3 nations, Afghanistan(October), USA(November) and Iraq(January of 2004, maybe?). Guess who will be the real candidate in 2 of the 3 "democratic" elections? None other than the AWOL flyboy(aka the White House Lying Pretzel by some of his critics) himself!...

The African American people from slavery to today have had to wage a hard, bitter and bloody struggle for the right to vote. The right to vote, therefore, is sacred; it is a basic part of achieving full democracy, including equality for all.
Eighty-three percent of Black registered voters told CBS/BET they would definitely vote this year. That is up from the record 71 percent Black turnout in 2000. It would be a decisive factor in the defeat of George W. Bush and the ultra-right Republican...

I went to an event the other night and picked up the magazine. Anything that is anti-capitalist and involves the people that have already helped bring a LOT of people together on the streets is something I want to be a part of. I'm sick of pretending its okay to support the parts of the sick system of this country that seem to be taboo to any political party saying no to....

The media has the power to end this charade by refusing to participate in partisan debates and demanding debates that provide the voters with broader perspectives. For example, on the critical issue of the Iraq War, without Nader in the debate there will be no candidate urging withdrawal from Iraq even though half the American public supports that view,” said Amato. “If the media fails to make demands for open debates then they are complicit in this partisan exercise.”...

The Democrats argued that voters should work within the current system, and that additional parties have negative effects on elections. "Let's face the facts; we have a two party system," Grant said.
"I would love to see more parties, but that's not how our country works," Leibner said. "You vote for the better of two candidates, you know."
[The nice thing about reading a college newspaper story on this debate is that the students, not knowing any better, r...
