Censorship Committee of Palo Alto Banishes Public Art Piece
Speaking in its own voice, the 7 foot tall egg-shaped public artwork sculpture brought its "anti-war/questioning the use of technology" message to the Censorship Committee of Palo Alto. Adriana Varella's sculpture appealed to the censoring group (also known as the Public Art Commission) at a meeting in Palo Alto City Hall on November 16. Despite requests from Palo Alto residents to give more time for public input, members of the committee, with hard hearts, voted unanimously and immediately ...

Sculpture Loved by Folks from Anarchists to Art Lovers On Chopping Block
On November 16 the Public Art Commission of Palo Alto voted unanimously to remove the artwork of Adriana Varella from the city’s public art collection. "Digital DNA", a seven foot tall egg shaped sculpture made of recycled circuit boards, imparts a political message—that technology generated by Silicon Valley has a far-reaching impact. It conveys that modern technology can enslave us, and reminds the viewer that technology is also used for warfare. In protest of the commission's decision, the...

New Reports Expose Racial and Economic Injustice, Ineffectiveness of Pollution Trading
Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch, said, “Pollution trading schemes like cap-and-trade unjustly burden lower-income communities of color. This is a fact. So many of us are rightfully desperate for solutions to our climate crisis, but market-based policies won’t save us. The only real way to significantly reduce carbon pollution is to stop producing it. We must move off fossil fuels now.” Photo: Governor Jerry Brown speaks at the COP 23 in Bonn, Germany on November 1...
