State prosecutor Leif Dautch announced the endorsement of California Assembly Speaker Emeritus John A. Pérez in his campaign for District Attorney of San Francisco. As an experienced prosecutor and former Commission President, Dautch is running a strong grassroots campaign focused on homelessness, quality of life issues, and environmental justice.

Speaker Pérez said: “I am proud to support Leif Dautch in his campaign for San Francisco District Attorney. Leif’s experience in prosecuting criminal cases at the state and local level combined with his background in environmental and human rights advocacy makes him an ideal fit for San Francisco’s future. San Francisco needs a District Attorney who can be both tough on violent crime and smart about progressive criminal justice reforms - I am confident that Leif Dautch is the candidate who can do both.”

John A. Pérez was elected Speaker of the California State Assembly in 2010, becoming the first openly gay Speaker to be elected to lead a state house. As Speaker, he brought together his colleagues to end California’s era of chronic budget deficits. He also authored the landmark Middle Class Scholarship which provided relief for students struggling to afford increasing tuition rates.

Dautch said that he is “honored to have the early support of Speaker Pérez, whose efforts on behalf of working people, social justice, and public safety have always inspired me.”

Dautch is a California native who graduated with honors from Yale College and Harvard Law School. After clerking on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, he joined the California Department of Justice, working as a prosecutor for Attorneys General Kamala Harris and Xavier Becerra. In six years as a Deputy Attorney General, Dautch has prosecuted more than 400 criminal cases in state and federal court - from trials to arguments before the California Supreme Court. He has also testified before the California State Assembly and State Senate on issues ranging from human trafficking to environmental protection.

In 2016, Mayor Ed Lee appointed Dautch to the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Commission, where he was elected Commission President by his peers. He also serves as the Vice Chair of the California State Bar’s Criminal Law Executive Committee, and has written for the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner on the auto burglary epidemic and environmental contamination in the Hunters Point Shipyard.

Momentum is building behind Dautch’s DA campaign, with endorsements from more than 60 elected officials, commissioners, and community leaders.

Leif Dautch is clearly a proud Democrat running for a reactionary office as the district attorney's office is known as "sending poor people to jail." He does not promise to prosecute the police for killing human beings and for terrorizing the homeless with tickets for sleeping on the sidewalk when they have nowhere to go. He does not promise to arrest the owners of the Marriott hotels for promoting slave wages and depriving people of medical care by demanding they pay impossible co-pays for their medical care, and then allowing scabs to pretend to run their hotels during a strike so that the Marriott hotels are now filthy, all in so the Marriott can engage in union-busting. He does not promise to prosecute the mayor and other city officials for refusing to stop the racism, sexism and retaliation against whistleblowers as documented at the recent Audit hearing of the Board of Supervisors. He does not promise to prosecute the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) for causing taxicab drivers to commit suicide with their viciously anti-labor policies. He does not promise to prosecute the SFMTA for promoting what the Civil Grand Jury calls a boondoggle, namely the 1.7 mile Central Subway, costing taxpayers billions of dollars with an ever ballooning cost as the delays increase for a short train ride to nowhere which does not even have a stop on Market Street, but rather 1,000 feet away at Union Square. He does not promise to prosecute the contractors who provided the wrong type of rail to the Central Subway, causing delays in construction and increased costs. He does not promise to prosecute the providers of the cracked steel at the new Transbay Transit Center. He does not promise to prosecute the owners of the Millennium Tower who refused to drill to bedrock so that now this 58 story building is sinking and tilting and may very well have to be torn down. He does not promise to prosecute the San Francisco Department of Public Works which has stolen the possessions of homeless people. He does not promise to prosecute Lennar Construction and others who insist on building homes on radioactive contaminated land at Treasure Island, Hunters Point and India Basin.
