SF Tenants Fight Stronger Than Ever After Three Years

The Midtown Tenants Association in SF's Western Addition has been resisting mass evictions and carrying out the city's longest rent strike since 2015.

Saturday, June 30, San Francisco-On a beautiful summer afternoon, the Midtown Tenants Association threw a rousing party in the green courtyard of their 129 unit apartment complex to celebrate their victories and encourage further support from residents and supporters.

The Midtown Garden Apartments, near Divisadero and Geary, were built in 1964 in response to city government destroying "over 2500 Black-owned Victorian homes and Displaced 4000 Blacks," according to the tenants association.

The Midtown tenants, predominantly African-American, largely governed themselves and were promised home ownership after they paid off the apartments' mortgage.

But when that time came, city government reneged on its promise. Instead it imposed external management by (N0) Mercy, a supposed non-profit, which, along which the mayor's office of (no) housing, began carrying out an underhanded campaign to kick everybody out of their homes by jacking up rents as much as 300 %.

The goal of these creeps is to empty the apartments and then knock down folk's homes, then throwing up unaffordable housing, the last thing SF needs.

In response the Midtown tenants refused to pay the outrageous rent increases, which really amounted to thinly veiled evictions, and began to fight to stay in their homes. They've garnered lots of support over the past three years.

But, shamefully, not one public official, elected or appointed, has come to their aid during all that time.

Saturday's event displayed Midtown's fighting spirit and continuing struggle for justice.
The courtyard's stage featured signs and banners proclaiming "Black Homes Matter","No Demolition" and "Stop Fillmore Gentrification."

As the aroma of homemade food and the sounds of local music filled the courtyard, the afternoon turned into a Stoned Soul Picnic for all.

Please join the Midtown Tenants and all of us fighting to stay in the City of Saint Francis.
