In November voters can vote to repeal Costa Hawkins Act
By Lynda Carson - June 18, 2018
Last Friday, Alex Padilla the Secretary of State, announced that enough valid signatures were collected, and that the Affordable Housing Act is heading to the November ballot.
A vote for the Affordable Housing Act will be the voters opportunity to repeal the draconian Costa Hawkins Act, the 1995 law that severely limits cities’ rent control options.
In recent months, California Legislators beholden to the corrupting influence of the landlord lobby and real estate lobby voted against AB 1506, an assembly bill that would have repealed the Costa Hawkins Act. Voting against AB 1506 allowed renters to be further victimized by greedy landlords, realtors, and developers.
Additionally, on Thursday May 31, 2018, corrupt California Legislators beholden to the big moneyed interests of the real estate lobby and landlord lobby, double-crossed tenants throughout the state by defeating AB 2925 (Authored by D. Rob Bonta-Oakland & James E. Vann), a bill that would require landlords to have a reason to evict a tenant from their housing.
Voters in various cities in California will also be allowed to vote for rent control measures next November, if enough valid signatures were collected in time for the rent control measures to be placed on the ballot for each city.
