Justice System In America
By: Dae’Jah Foster

The United States justice system is racists, sexist, and repressive. According to media and statistics, the agents of the justice system profiles, criminalizes, and imprisons Black men at high rates in comparison to other races for crimes that are less offensive or just as offensive as other racial counterparts.
Coming from times when the “police” were meant to catch runaway Black males in slavery, the legacy of policing has continued. Police are supposed protect, serve, and honor per the Law Enforcement Oath of Honor which states they will have integrity, be brave, and honor the community they serve in the form of protection. However, there seems to be the opposite effect happening which is reflected in the media and statistics on mass incarceration.
The United States is number one in mass incarceration with 500 people being incarcerated for every 100,000 and the numbers keep increasing. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 90 percent of prisoners are young males in their 20s and 30s who are 6 times more likely of being jailed compared to other ethnicities. From this 90 percent of males, about half consists of Black males.
