Top 10 Reasons to Build the Rail Trail
Why rail and trail? Because meeting human needs in a sustainable manner requires a blend of solutions. Our rail trail will begin serving cyclists and pedestrians this year without sacrificing longer distance transit opportunities.
The mission of the Santa Cruz County Friends of the Rail and Trail (FORT) is to promote, support, and enable the development of a rail with trail transportation system in Santa Cruz County.
FORT’s current focus is to get the 32-mile Coastal Rail Trail from Watsonville to Davenport built as soon as possible. To this end, FORT is garnering wide-spread community support for the Rail Trail through public education, outreach, advocacy and fundraising. Education and outreach activities include tabling at community events, distributing informational pamphlets, print advertisements, as well as presenting at a variety of meetings and events.

Trail Now (April 1, 2017):
We recently attended a Trail Only event by The Great Santa Cruz Trail Group. At the event, Jeff Clark (Mavericks founder) described how as a 17 year old, he would tell everyone how great the breaks were at Mavericks. No one believed him and he surfed it by himself. Now it is a world-class surf spot. Great example how when the rail-trail (Trail Only) is built along the Coastal Corridor, people will ask "why didn't we do this sooner".
------
Developer/Investors Miles Reiter (Driscoll's) and Bud Colligan (founder and CEO of South Swell Ventures) have literally millions to spend to hoodwink and bamboozle Santa Cruz citizens and RTC(*) commissioners.
Does the county need to lose it's rail line for a 32-mile land grab and property giveaway?
No, we can have a trail, a better trail and sooner, if we KEEP the tracks.
* Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC)
------
Trail Now is intentionally confusing people by calling for a "rail-trail" which would only be a pedestrian "trail", and not utilizing the existing "rail" for train transportation.
But if you only read their website, and wonder "Who is Trail Now", they claim to be a "grass roots" organization:
"Trail Now is a grass roots organization made up of individuals that want to do right by our community. We are students, doctors, professionals, and people just like you."

Sure, OK, if you consider the founder and CEO of a private investment firm and his buddy, the CEO of Driscoll's, to be "grass roots".
