Uhuru Pies Oakland is proud to introduce a new head baker, Ngoyi Folayan. Folayan has also introduced a new product to this year’s offering: Uhuru Sweets in a Jar. This year’s flavor is spice cake with cinnamon cream cheese butter-cream frosting!

For more than 30 years, the Uhuru holiday pie sale has been a progressive holiday tradition in the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing social justice to the holiday table. Each fall, thousands of delighted buyers and hundreds of volunteer bakers and pie sellers support this vital program.

Uhuru Foods and Pies is a dynamic African economic development institution of Black Star Industries (BSI). Black Star Industries is the seed of an independent African economy being built by the Uhuru Movement. It includes programs like independent media, screened apparel and African marketplaces.
While in college, Folayan wanted to learn how to make and decorate cakes. She got a position in the bakery department of the local grocery store where she hoped to learn.

While working there she was mostly small tasks, such as cutting bread. So, Folayan left that job, trained herself how to bake and decorate the most beautiful, unique cakes and opened a bakery in the Midwest with her sister.

Now Ngoyi is bringing her talents to Uhuru Pies! Here’s what Ngoyi says about herself and Uhuru Pies: “I am so excited to have the opportunity to bring my skills to Uhuru Foods & Pies in Oakland, CA.
“I am honored to become a part of the economic development process.
“Self determination is the highest form of democracy and you can't have self determination without self reliance!

“I am grateful for my past experiences in life that have led me to this point. With power in the hands of the African working class, young, enthused Af-ricans won't have to strive for acceptance from the bourgeoisie, we will be here to offer the training they require and empower them to be strong leaders for the movement. Uhuru!!”

Uhuru Pies are available in several flavors including it’s famous Sweet Potato pie, as well as standards
like Apple, Pecan and Pumpkin. A vegan version of her Uhuru Sweets in a Jar creation is also available.
Uhuru Pies are available at pop-up locations. Between November 19 and 25 and again between December 9 and 24, you can request a free delivery of Uhuru Pies to locations in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz.
