Cops shooting cops!
It appears that police violence is so rampant, and white supremacy is so fundamental to our society, that not even membership within their ranks will protect a black cop from the bullets fired by fellow officers. This much was affirmed on Friday, July 17th when two Seaside cops shot and injured an off-duty federal police officer who stepped outside of his house with a gun as the cops escorted his intoxicated wife home around 1:00am. This insight was not so obvious to his wife who reportedly screamed at the Seaside cops for shooting "one of your own."

After first hearing about 'cops shooting another cop,' immediate thoughts echoed the graffiti tagged on so many walls after the pigs in New York were gunned down: "No tears for dead slave catchers." However, upon learning more of the details, some of the indifference, and even amusement, the sense of "chickens coming home to roost," was lost. On the one hand, we can't mourn the fact that a cop has been at least temporarily removed from the streets. One less agent of the state is actually quite heartening, regardless of the circumstances. On the other hand, we can't celebrate any act of violence committed by the state. And in as much as this was nearly another lynching, an incident of anti-black violence committed by the agents of an inherently racist institution, to that extent we must oppose such violence.
Perhaps this will help lift the veil that obscures the inherent anti-blackness of the police. No doubt some will continue their empty demands for 'culturally competent training' and for police forces that 'look like the community' that they're policing. We hope that, seeing how the pigs have practically cannibalized their own, some observers will stop desperately hoping that the police will one day protect them in the same way that they protect wealth and whiteness, and instead respond only with antagonism to this pillar of white supremacy. If one is truly trying to demolish a building, one does not attempt in any way to buttress the pillars, but rather take a wrecking ball to the pillars and foundation.
