Rally for Buena Vista in Palo Alto

by R. Robertson
More than 400 people rallied in front of Palo Alto City Hall on March 9th. Their fight is to preserve Buena Vista Mobile Home Park which provides affordable homes for about 100 families. Housing advocates, residents of the mobile home park, and their supporters swarmed the City Hall chambers after the rally.

Buena Vista is the last mobile home park in Palo Alto, and more than a hundred families will be displaced if the owner, who is trying to sell the property for development, succeeds in his plan.

Residents of Buena Vista and hundreds of supporters rallied at City Hall on March 9th to loudly voice support for the park's preservation. Residents, many of whom wore Save Our Homes t-shirts, spoke to Spanish language television stations. The Raging Grannies sang Estamos Trabajando por la Justicia to cheers from the crowd.

After the rally, the demonstrators swarmed City Hall chambers. Bodies pressed against each other filling the room wall to wall. Speakers urged the council to approve an $8 million allocation for funding the mobile home park immediately.

Supporters cheered themselves on and shouted Si Se Puede, but will City Council do the right thing? The vote will take place at a later date.
