Organizations to Launch Santa Cruz Redwoods National Monument Campaign in February
Groups supporting the establishment a Redwoods National Monument in the Santa Cruz Mountains will kick-off their campaign on Thursday, February 12, featuring former Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz. Organizations hope to encourage President Obama to designate 5800 acres of Coast Dairies property, North of Wilder Ranch State Park, and South of Swanton, into a permanently protected and publicly accessible National Monument. Representatives of the Bureau of Land Management, other California communities that have recently established National Monuments, and members of the local campaign Community Advisory Committee will also be speaking at the kick-off event.
A coalition of local land trusts, including Sempervirens Fund, The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, The Nature Conservancy, Save the Redwoods League, and Peninsula Open Space Trust, are organizing the campaign, along with a Citizens Advisory Committee. A "Friends of the Santa Cruz Redwoods National Monument" group is currently forming, and a "fact sheet" (see PDF), map (see photo), and website have been presented to the public. The campaign sponsors so far include Hilltromper, Sentinel Printers, KUSP 88.9 Central Coast Public Radio, Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, and the Coastal Watershed Council.
According to the Santa Cruz Redwoods National Monument website, grants through the Bay Area Conservation Initiative of Resources Legacy Fund (RLF), with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, funded development of an LLI, or "Living Landscape Initiative."
