Anti-Eviction Mapping Project Releases Map of Killings by Law Enforcement in Oakland

The Anti-Eviction Mapping Project is releasing a map of killings by law enforcement in Oakland, California, from 1970 onwards. Each site of murder on the map has a story, a geolocation, a date, and sometimes a photograph to correspond to it: http://www.antievictionmappingproject.net/opd.html

The list is comprised of OPD data, news sources, and crowd data, but is not, and most likely never will be, complete. Of 90 deaths by the Oakland Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and the BART Police in Oakland, CA from 1970 onwards, we have identified the races of 78 victims. Of those, we have found that 76, or *99%, are people of color*. Fifty-eight, or 74%, are black. Twelve, or 15%, are Latino. We welcome people to email us with deaths that we have not reported to add them to our map: antievictionmap at riseup dot net.

Between 2000 and 2011, the city of Oakland paid $57 million to victims and families of victims of police abuse - the largest sum of any city in California. Also significantly only 9% of Oakland's police force live in Oakland.
